HSAM volunteers return from their 5th neutering and treatment trip. This was another successful trip; 55 cats were neutered and other procedures carried out including 2 eye removals, removal of a mammary lump and a cryptorchid castration. Vital treatment was given to over 50 kittens, not forgetting the dogs that received treatment for fleas, worms and mange. The number of cats neutered prevented 150-200 kittens being born onto the streets of Essaouira. Our achievements have contributed massively to a healthier cat population.

HOLIDAYMAKERS EXPERIENCE HSAM’S WORK AT FIRST HAND. We received the following report from John Murphy and Christine Rimoldy: ‘My wife and I were recently on holiday in Essaouira and while there we chanced upon a lost kitten close to our hotel (Sofitel) who needed assistance urgently. When asked for a vet, the hotel called Mr Adnan El Aji who promptly turned up and was of great assistance, taking the “patient” with him. We also indicated to him the whereabouts of two other kittens near the restaurant “Chez Sam” opposite the Moroccan gendarmerie. He subsequently told me over the phone that those two kittens had been checked and one was treated for eye problems. When asked about a fee, Mr El Aji told us we could make a contribution to HSAM.’

Trip October 2008 - HSAM's second successful visit. This time a group of 9 volunteers, consisting of a vet, two nurses and six experienced handlers returned for two weeks work. During this period 86 male cats were castrated, 30 females spayed and c.70 kittens were given treatment. It seems we are already having a marked effect on the cat population; a number of locals commented on how many of the male cats were so much more relaxed now and spend their time lazing around rather than fighting over females! It caused us great concern that Essaouira's dog population is increasing rapidly. Dog ownership is becoming ever more popular amongst Moroccans but unfortunately not always the responsibility that comes with it. As such, many dogs are abandoned and left free to roam and breed. Sadly, mange is an all too common problem and all of the dogs we encountered were suffering from this. In total we castrated two males and spayed four females. During our trip in Spring 2009, our main focus will be the dogs. Click HERE for a picture.
So far, a total of 499 street animals have received our help.
